Glossary for Nephropathy

  • Abdominal conditions: Medical conditions affecting the abdominal region.
  • Angiopathy, hereditary, with nephropathy, aneurysms and muscle cramps: An inherited disorder characterized by kidney disease, aneurysms, blood vessel disease and muscle cramps which can last from seconds to minutes.
  • Dahlberg syndrome: A rare condition characterized by hypoparathyroidism, nephropathy, congenital lymphedema, mitral valve prolapse and short end bones in fingers and toes.
  • Diabetic Nephropathy: Kidney disease from diabetic blood sugars.
  • Epstein (C.J.) syndrome: A rare condition characterized by deafness, kidney inflammation, a reduced number of normal blood platelets needed for clotting and the presence of large blood platelets.
  • Gout: Painful joints, most commonly the big toe.
  • HERNS syndrome: A rare inherited syndrome characterized by blood vessel disease which causes eye and kidney disease and strokes. Neurological manifestations tend to occur around the 2nd and 3rd decade of life due to the blood vessels in the brain being affected.
  • Hemodialysis: A treatment used to remove toxic elements from the blood
  • IgA nephropathy: A rare disorder where kidney inflammation leads to a build up of the antibody (IgA) in the kidney which results in the characteristic symptom of blood in the urine.
  • Kidney Cancer: Cancer that forms in tissues of the kidneys
  • Kidney conditions: Any condition affecting the kidney organs.
  • Kidney disease: Reduced kidney function from various causes.
  • Kidney failure: Total failure of the kidneys to filter waste
  • Kidney stones: Kidney stones are solid deposits of salts (e.g calcium) from the urine. These deposits can impair the passage of urine that has the potential to result in infection and kidney damage or failure in severe cases.
  • Nephritis: Any type of kidney inflammation
  • Obstructive nephropathy: A condition which is characterized by obstructive of the urinary tract resulting in kidney disease and dysfunction
  • Reflux nephropathy: A condition which is characterized by reflux of urine from the bladder back up the ureters
  • Renal disorder: disease affecting the kidneys

  • Urinary system conditions: Medical conditions affecting urination, urinary organs or the urinary system.
