The types and severity of symptoms of nerve entrapment vary between individuals and the specific type of nerve or nerves that are affected. In many cases, symptoms can be vague and develop slowly, such as in carpal tunnel syndrome. Symptoms can also occur more rapidly and dramatically.
General symptoms of nerve entrapment due to carpal tunnel syndrome or ulnar tunnel syndrome may include pain, weakness, burning and numbness of the forearm, wrists and/or hands. These symptoms can run all the way up the arm to the shoulder Symptoms can be worse at night. Changing position or may bring some amount of relief of symptoms.
If carpal tunnel syndrome or ulnar tunnel syndrome are not treated, they can lead to permanent complications. These include permanent numbness and a weak grip in the hand. Disability of the hands and wrists can also occur in severe cases.
General symptoms of nerve entrapment due to slipped disc, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis may include pain, weakness, burning and numbness of the buttocks, legs, and/or feet. Changing position or may bring some amount of relief of symptoms in some cases.
If slipped disc, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or spondylolisthesis are not treated, they can lead to permanent complications. These include permanent numbness of the rectum and upper thigh and buttock areas, severe weakness, paralysis, bladder incontinence or difficulty urinating, and bowel dysfunction.
General symptoms of nerve entrapment due to pudendal nerve entrapment may include pain, burning or numbness in the urethra, vagina, or rectum.
