Treatments for Nosebleeds
Treatments for Nosebleeds:
Immediate treatment of epistaxis includes pinching the nose shut or using a nose clip to hold it closed until the bleeding stops. Applying ice may be done as well. This often works well to treat a mild anterior epistaxis. For more serious cases of epistaxis, including posterior epistaxis, nasal packing and cautery using topical medications may also be needed.
Treatment then requires diagnosing and treating any underlying cause of epistaxis. Treatment plans are individualized based on the underlying cause, the presence of coexisting diseases, the age and medical history of the patient, and other factors. Treatment generally involves a multifaceted plan that addresses the cause, minimizes episodes of nosebleed, and decreases the risk of developing serious complications, such as anemia.
Epistaxis can be caused by nasal irritation due to excessive nose blowing due to a upper respiratory infection or allergy. The treatment is avoiding blowing the nose or blowing gently, rest, increased fluids and using a vaporizer.
When epistaxis is caused by a bacterial infection, such as in sinusitis, antibiotics are prescribed as well. Using air purifiers and avoiding allergens can prevent or improve epistaxis due to allergies or allergic rhinitis.
Treatment of more serious causes of epistaxis, such as hemophilia, Christmas disease, leukemia, Von Willebrand's disease and hypertension, varies. Treatment requires regular medical monitoring and care and can include medications, stem cell transplant and infusion of clotting factors. Hospitalization and intensive care may also be needed.
