A 66 year old manís warfarin therapy was ceased after 2 months to allow for a laminectomy procedure. The warfarin was restarted again after the procedure but several weeks later the man suffered a fall at home and was taken to hospital suffering from nausea and vomiting. He then required rehabilitation after a CT uncovered an intracerebral hemorrhage. The patient sued on the grounds that his warfarin therapy was not suitably monitored resulting in the hemorrhage but this was countered by claims that he did not take his medication as instructed. The case was settled for $500,000.
