Health Canada is advising consumers about the safety concerns associated with selective COX-2 inhibitor NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories) such as Vioxx, Celebrex, BExtra and Mobicox which are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and menstrual pain (primary dysmenorrhea). The safety concerns raised revolve around the increased risk of heart attack or stroke in some people. The risk appears directly related to dosage and length of treatment. Vioxx has already been withdrawn due to increased risk of heat attack and stroke after 18 months of use.
