Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, or Kikuchi disease is a cause of inflammation of lymph nodes with an unknown cause (suspected autoimmune or infectious disorder). It predominantly affects young adult females and commonly causes painless hardening and enlargement of the neck lymph nodes with occasional flu-like symptoms and fever. It is detected via a medical history and examination, followed by a CT scan or MRI, and diagnosed by analysing the tissue after a lymph node biopsy. It is commonly misdiagnosed for lymphoma as the cancerous condition presents in the same manner, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Treatment is symptomatic as Kikuchi disease self resolves after 1-6 months.
