Misdiagnosis of drug allergy ends in 1 million award for medical malpractice

A man sought treatment for leg cramps and was prescribed quinine sulfate. The man was taken to the hospital emergency room when he became ill after taking the medication. The doctor there misdiagnosed his allergic drug reaction which resulted in the many suffering kidney failure requiring dialysis and eventually a kidney transplant. The man was awarded $1 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit which ruled that the doctor prescribed the right drug but should have been to diagnose the allergic drug reaction when the man returned to hospital.
