Mother's diagnosis of meningitis

A 12 year old boy believed that the flu-like symptoms he was experiencing were due to the common viral illness, and not meningitis which was suspected by his mother after she noticed a non-blanching rash on his back. The boy was taken to a medical clinic where he was diagnosed, given penicillin and sent straight to hospital for follow-up treatment for viral meningitis. He was discharged 3 days later.
