A study has found a high prevalence of pain amongst people over 70. Pain is more prevalent amongst women. Although women are more likely to experience depression than men, pain was more commonly associated with symptoms of depression in men. The pain in both sexes was most frequently located in the lower back but women were more prone than men to pain in the upper back, shoulders, arms, hands and knees. Researchers say that this study should encourage doctors to be aware of depression when diagnosing or treating an elderly patient with pain - especially men.
