Prolonged diagnosis causes loss of testicle for adolescent

A 15 year old boy lost his right testicle after an over worked rural physician failed to recognize that he had torsion of the testis (twisted testicle), which required immediate surgery. The boy experienced pain in his testicles that was similar to being kicked. After 12 hours the boy was examined and treated by the doctor, however the testicles can only survive 6-8 hours after blood supply is cut off. The doctor had worked a three day shift prior to the boy's presentation to the rural hospital and refused to see the boy until the morning, prescribing pain relief to help the symptoms. The mother successfully filed for official acknowledgement of the doctor's medical error, who apologized for his mistake and continues to work.
