Sigmoidoscopy insensitive screening tool for bowel cancer in women

Sigmoidoscopy, a screening test for colon cancer, does not detect up to two-thirds of precancerous lesions or polyps in females, according to a recent study. Colonoscopy is a preferred screening tool as it uses a long scope to which a camera is attached to the end, allowing visualisation of the lining of the large bowel. A sigmoidoscope is much shorter and only reaches as far as the last part of the large bowel. Sigmoidoscopies are cheaper and faster, and do not require sedating drugs for the patient. Screening recommendations for bowel cancer start at age 50, or earlier if there is a family history. Bowel cancer is a common and fatal disease.
