A study conducted on stroke victims found that by applying interchanging hot and cold stimulation to paralyzed upper limbs, patients developed an increased rate of recovery. Thermal stimulation is also used for treating dysphagia and recovering after orthopedic surgery and acts by stimulating larger areas of the brain that assists with remodelling required to return motor function to paralyzed muscles. Those volunteers in the thermal stimulation study group found that they had earlier return of function with better sensation and strength.
