Controversial claims that an acne treatment, isotretinoin causes depression leading to suicide was the focus for a study that discovered does cause detectable changes in brain functioning. However, when compared to a control group using antibiotics, there was no difference between the two groups regarding depressive symptom severity, despite there being changes in brain metabolism in the isotretinoin group. None of the subjects in the isotretinoin group had a premorbid psychiatric condition. Other studies conducted on patient's satisfaction with using isoretinoin, which is similar to Vitamin A, as an acne treatment found that there was improvement of mood. Changes in brain metabolism in the isotretinoin group was detected by position emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to assess brain anatomy. Isotretinoin use during pregnancy is known to cause congenital brain defects in babies.
