The official criteria for bipolar disorder are at least one episode of mania lasting at least four days. Manic episodes must involve at least three of the following: inflated self-esteem grandiose behavior, increased talkativeness, reduced sleeping, racing thoughts, increased goal-directed activity, distractibility and taking unnecessary dangerous risks. Juvenile bipolar disorder had the same criteria but the manic episodes may have different symptoms and length of manic cycle can be as short as a few hours.
