Allergic rhinitis affects about 36 million Americans each year. A study funded by Pfizer has found that Zyrtec is 14% over 5 to 12 hours after dosing more effective than its competitor Allegra. The two drugs are used to treat seasonal allergic rhinitis and ragweed sensitivity. Another study has found that Zyrtec is 33% more effective than Allegra at 21 to 25 hours after dosing. Both of the drugs are well tolerated with few side effects. Zyrtec can be used by adults and children and the main side effects in children includes drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, sore throat and stomach pains but they were generally mild and fairly rare.
