The adenoids are small lymph glands at the back of the nasal cavity where it meets the pharynx (throat). They are similar in function to tonsils and are part of the immune system.

Adenoids: The adenoids are a pair of structures, classified as a type of tonsil, that are a part of the immune system. Adenoids are located in the roof of the pharynx and back of the nose help to protect the body from potential infection of invading pathogens into the respiratory system and the digestive system. They possibly play a role in fighting pharyngeal infections and upper respiratory infections.

The adenoids are made up of lymphatic tissue and contain lymphocytes. Conditions that can afflict the adenoids include adenoid hypertrophy, tonsillitis, and pharyngeal cancer.
