Article Excerpts about Aorta

Arteries are the passageways through which the blood is delivered, the largest of which is the aorta. The aorta branches off the heart and divides into many smaller arteries, which have muscular walls that adjust their diameter to increase or decrease blood flow to a particular body area.

Summary Information: Aorta

Aorta: The aorta is the largest artery and largest blood vessel and one of the great vessels of the body. The function of the aorta is to carry freshly oxygenated blood from the heart to the body. Freshly oxygenated blood is pumped from the left ventricle through the aortic valve into the aorta and to smaller arteries to the rest of the body. These smaller arteries include the brachiocephalic artery, the left common carotid artery, common iliac arteries and the left subclavian artery. There are three main sections of the aorta. They include the ascending aorta, aortic arch and descending aorta.

Conditions that afflict the aorta include trauma, aortic aneurysm, coarctation of the aorta, atherosclerosis, congenital heart defects, and transposition of the great vessels.
