Nail Matrix

Summary Information: Nail Matrix

Nail Matrix: The nail matrix is located below the nail and consists of a layer of living epidermis, in contrast to the nail itself, which is made of dead cells. The nail matrix is where nail growth happens. It is located under the nail at the base of the nail bed. Cells from the nail matrix multiply and push forward and become keratinized to form the scaly nail and produce nail growth. Conditions that can afflict the nail matrix include fungal infection, trauma and subungal hematoma.
