Splenius Muscles: The splenius muscles are two paired muscles of the posterior neck and upper back. The splenius muscles originate on some of the cervical and thoracic vertebrae and insert on the occiput, temporal bone and some of the cervical vertebrae. The splenius muscles extend the neck and head and rotate the head.
The splenius muscles include the splenius cervicis and the splenius capitis. Conditions that can afflict the splenius muscles include splenius capitis muscle syndrome, whiplash, overuse injuries, tears, strains, myopathy, atrophy, infectious myositis, neuromuscular diseases, lacerations and contusions.
