Treatments for Palpitations

Treatments for Palpitations:

Treatment plans for palpitations are individualized depending on the underlying cause, the presence of coexisting diseases, the age and medical history of the patient, and other factors. Treatment generally involves a multifaceted plan that addresses the cause, eases the discomfort of palpitations, decreases the risk of developing serious complications, and helps a person to rest comfortably and live an active life.

Treatment of palpitations caused by the use of medications, such as over-the-counter cold medications, may require switching to a medication that does not contain stimulating ingredients. Cutting back or eliminating caffeine and stimulating herbal supplements, such as Siberian ginseng, can also eliminate palpitations.

Treatment of palpitations caused by the use of street drugs includes stopping use of the substance. This may require hospitalization in the initial phase of withdrawal from the substance, and an intensive, multifaceted inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation program. Acute overdoses of street drugs that cause palpitations require emergency care and possibly critical care and life-support interventions.

If palpitations are suspected to be due to a respiratory, cardiac or serious gastrointestinal condition or disease, treatment generally involves supplemental oxygen. There are a variety of devices that are worn on the face to deliver different concentrations of supplemental oxygen. Oxygen is delivered to the lungs through a breathing tube and mechanical ventilation in cases where palpitations accompanies respiratory insufficiency, respiratory failure, or cardiopulmonary arrest.

Palpitations that accompany a heart attack are treated with supplemental oxygen, medications, such as nitroglycerin, and anti-clotting drugs. Treatment also includes medication to dissolve a clot in the coronary artery that is causing the heart attack or a surgical procedure that opens up the clogged coronary artery (angioplasty).

When palpitations is caused by asthma or COPD, medications may include corticosteroids and bronchodilators, which are breathed into the lungs via inhalers and nebulizers. Other respiratory diseases that cause palpitations may require additional intravenous medications, hospitalization, intensive care and possibly life support measures.

Palpitations caused by hyperventilation or an anxiety attack can be treated by breathing into a paper bag and possibly anti-anxiety medication. Psychiatric follow-up care may be needed to treat anxiety.

Palpitations caused by trauma to the chest that results in a collapsed lung, such as pneumothorax or hemopneumothorax, is treated by re-inflating the lung and draining the blood by insertion of a chest tube. Intensive care is also required.

Treatment of palpitations caused by anemia or shock requires emergency care and hospitalization. Critical care and life-support interventions may be necessary.
