Back pain is commonly experienced during pregnancy. Back pain can be due to the extra weight that a growing fetus puts on a woman's lower back. In addition, during pregnancy ligaments and fibrous tissue become more elastic. This helps the pelvic area to expand to accommodate a growing pregnancy. Because of this increased elasticity, the back and other joints may be more susceptible to strains, aches and pains.
There are also number of serious complications of pregnancy that can cause back pain during pregnancy, including miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, and premature labor. Back pain may also signal the onset of or accompany contractions during full-term labor.
