Symptoms of Red Eyes

Symptoms of Red Eyes: Introduction

Red eyes often occur with other symptoms which vary, depending on the underlying disease, disorder or condition that causes red eyes.

Symptoms that accompany red eyes due to scleritis or uveitis include inflammation of the eyes, eye pain and impaired vision. Serious complications include cataracts, glaucoma and blindness.

Symptoms that can occur with red eyes due to an eye infection, such as viral conjunctivitis or bacterial conjunctivitis (pinkeye), include an unusual discharge from the eye. Swollen lymph nodes and sore throat may also occur.

Red eyes can also occur with allergic conjunctivitis, with additional symptoms that include itchy eyes and a watery nose. Herpes simplex infection, fungal infection, and bacterial infection can also cause red eyes and result in a corneal ulcer and permanently impaired vision.

Symptoms that accompany red eyes due to eye trauma, such as corneal abrasion, foreign body or chemical burns of the eyes, include eye pain, burning, tearing, sensitivity to light, and impaired vision. A serious complication of eye trauma is permanently impaired vision.
