Glossary for Rib fracture

  • Accident or injury conditions: Medical conditions caused by accidents or physical injuries.
  • Bone conditions: Conditions that affect the bones
  • Breathing difficulties: Various types of breathing difficulty (dyspnea).
  • Chest conditions: Any condition affecting the chest
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Cushing's disease: A condition of hyperadrenocorticism which is secondary to excessive pituitary secretion of ACTH. Cushing's disease is different to Cushing's syndrome which refers to the effects of glucocorticoid excess from any cause.
  • Cushing's syndrome: A rare syndrome where excessive secretion of corticosteroids by the adrenal cortex leads to a variety of symptoms. Hormone-secreting adrenal or pituitary tumors are often the cause of the excessive corticosteroid secretion.
  • Flail Chest: The separation of a portion of the rib cage from the rest of the chest wall - usually due to trauma. The severity of the condition varies depending on the extent of the damage.
  • Fractures: Fracture of a bone; also "broken bone".
  • Hypophosphatasia: A rare genetic disorder characterized by short limbs, dwarfism and general lack of bone calcification.
  • Musculoskeletal conditions: Medical conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of bones, muscles and related structures.
  • Myositis: One of the underlying causes for muscle weakness/myopathy.
  • Pain: A feeling of suffering, agony, distress caused by the stimulation of pain fibres in the nervous system
  • Pain conditions: Diseases characterized by pain and pain-like symptoms.
  • Pleurisy: Inflammation of the pleural membrane
  • Pneumothorax: Air in the pleural spaces around the lungs.
  • Rib Bruise: Bruise occurring on or around the ribs.

  • Rib fracture: A fracture of the ribs
  • Rib swelling: Swelling occurring on or around the ribs
  • Spleen conditions: Any condition that affects the spleen
  • Thoracic wall deformity: Malformation or distortion the normal appearance of the chest.
  • Tietz syndrome: Tietz syndrome is a relatively rare condition characterized by deafness and albinism. It should not be confused with the similarly named Tietz's syndrome which involves inflammation of chest cartilage.
