Causes of Hypoglycemia

Introduction: Hypoglycemia

There are many potential causes of hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia can happen by itself or can be a symptom of or occur with a variety of mild to serious diseases, disorders and conditions.

A potentially serious form of hypoglycemia occurs in people with diabetes who have an insulin reaction. Insulin is an injectable drug that is used to treat the high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) caused by diabetes. Sometimes a person with diabetes may take too much insulin or not eat enough carbohydrates. This can result in too low of a blood sugar or hypoglycemia. Sometimes the blood sugar can get very low and result in unconsciousness.

Hypoglycemia can also occur in some people after drinking alcohol, especially large amounts of alcohol. Hypoglycemia can also be caused by over-exercising and not eating enough carbohydrates and by starvation dieting and fasting.

Serious disease, disorders and conditions that can also increase the risk of developing hypoglycemia include hepatitis, type 1 diabetes, insulin-secreting tumors of the pancreas, kidney disease, Addison's disease and liver disease. Hypoglycemia can also be a side effect of some medications. In some cases, it is not possible to diagnose the underlying cause of hypoglycemia.
