It is generally recommended that people with pulmonary edema and heart failure follow a low sodium diet because excessive salt increases blood pressure and retention of fluid in the lungs and body.
Prevention of high altitude pulmonary edema due to acute mountain sickness includes ascending to higher altitudes slowly and allowing time for acclamation before exercising. It is also important to stay well hydrated in high altitudes and not to drink alcohol or consume food, supplements or drinks that contain caffeine. Early symptoms of mild acute mountain sickness may be effectively treated simply by going to a lower altitude.
Prevention of pulmonary edema in infants includes careful calculation and monitoring of the amount of intravenous fluid administered to an infant.
Treatment of pulmonary edema includes the administration of supplemental high concentrations of oxygen with a face mask. Breathing may need to be supported by mechanical ventilation that pumps concentrated oxygen and air through a breathing tube that has been inserted into the windpipe.
