Testicular torsion

Testicular torsion: Introduction

Testicular torsion is a rare but serious condition that occurs when the spermatic cord, which carries the blood supply to the testicle, is twisted. The twisting of spermatic cord cuts off the blood supply to the testicle and can result in testicle strangulation. This can permanently damage to the testicle and lead to loss of the testicle and male infertility.

Testicular torsion, also called torsion of the testicle, is rare. Testicular torsion generally occurs in teenage boys, although it can occur at any time in life. Testicular torsion can be the result of trauma to the testicles or strenuous exercise, but the cause is often unknown.

Symptoms of testicular torsion include sudden, severe testicular pain, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and syncope. Testicular torsion is a true medical emergency because if it is not treated promptly it can result in testicle strangulation and the death of the testicle and surrounding tissues. For more details on symptoms and complications, refer to symptoms of testicular torsion.

Because of the sudden extremely painful nature of testicular torsion, boys and men with the condition generally seek prompt medical care. Making a diagnosis of testicular torsion includes taking a thorough medical history, including symptoms, and completing a physical examination that focuses on the testicles. A diagnosis can often be made based on the symptoms and testicle exam.

Diagnostic ultrasound of the scrotum may be performed as well, but treatment of testicular torsion should not be unnecessarily delayed while waiting for an ultrasound.

Rapid recognition and surgical correction or manual untwisting of testicular torsion can save the testicle and retain normal function in the majority of cases. In some cases, the testicle may untwist on its own. In some cases, removal of the testicle may be required. For more information on treatment, refer to treatment of Testicular torsion. ...more »
