Glossary for Venous Insufficiency

  • Circulatory system conditions: Medical conditions affecting the heart and the circulatory system.
  • Cramps: The painful spasmodic muscular contraction
  • Deep vein thrombosis: Blood clot in vein, often in calf muscle vein in the leg.
  • Dracunculiasis: An infectious disease caused by the nematode Dracunculus medinensis which is usually transmitted by drinking water contaminated by infected crustaceans.
  • Edema: Fluid retention in tissues
  • Hyperpigmentation: Excess skin pigment or coloration
  • Leg pain: Pain affecting the leg
  • Leg ulcer: A deep break in the skin of the leg.
  • Lipodermatosclerosis: A rare condition that affects the skin above the ankles. It tends to occur in people with chronic vein problems which affects the blood flow the this area of skin. The skin becomes smooth, brown, tight and painful.
  • Nephrotic syndrome: Various kidney glomeruli conditions
  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome: A condition characterized by pain and reduced range of motion in the shoulder and hand of the affected arm.
  • Varicose veins: Enlarged blue veins, usually in the legs.
  • Yellow nail syndrome: A rare nail condition characterized by thickened yellow nails as well as swelling of parts of the body due to lymphatic drainage problems resulting from blocked or damaged lymphatic system.
