Glossary for Vitamin A deficiency

  • Anderson's triad: The association of cystic fibrosis, celiac disease and vitamin A deficiency.
  • Anisocytosis: Variation in red blood cell size, commonly seen in anaemia
  • Blindness: The inability to see out of the eyes
  • Corneal inflammation: Inflammation of the cornea.
  • Dry eyes: Autoimmune disease damaging the eye tear ducts and other glands.
  • Eye conditions: Any condition that affects the eyes
  • Eye inflammation: Inflammation of the orbit of the eye
  • Eye symptoms: Symptoms affecting the eye
  • Keratitis: Any inflammation of the cornea of the eye
  • Keratomalacia: A rare eye disease that results from a deficiency of vitamin A.
  • Kidney stones: Kidney stones are solid deposits of salts (e.g calcium) from the urine. These deposits can impair the passage of urine that has the potential to result in infection and kidney damage or failure in severe cases.
  • Kwashiorkor: A malnutrition state that is produced by severe protein deficiency
  • Malabsorption: Failure to digest nutrients properly
  • Night blindness: Poor vision in darkness or dim light
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease of unknown etiology that is recognized increasingly in children.

  • Rough skin: The appearance of rough skin
  • Urinary tract infections: Infection of the urinary system; usually bacterial.
  • Vilanova-Canadeli syndrome: A syndrome involving the association of hypothyroidism and a skin disorder caused by vitamin A deficiency.
