Symptoms of Vomiting
Symptoms of Vomiting: Introduction
Vomiting can be experienced and described in a variety of ways that often includes the sensation of nausea prior to the vomiting. This includes feelings of wooziness, queasiness, retching, sea-sickness, car-sickness, an upset stomach, vertigo, and feeling green around the gills. Not all people will always experience nausea before or with vomiting.
Other symptoms that accompany vomiting vary depending on the underlying cause. Symptoms can include diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, belching, headache, fever, and dizziness. Other coexisting symptoms can include flu-like symptoms, fatigue, bloody stools, vomiting blood, change in level of consciousness, eye pain, yellow skin and eyes (jaundice) and blurred vision. Vomiting may also occur without other symptoms.
Complications of vomiting include dehydration. If untreated, severe dehydration can lead to an electrolyte imbalance and shock. Vomiting blood can result in severe complications of anemia, hypovolemic shock and death.
A critical complication of vomiting can also occur if the contents of the stomach flow into the lungs (aspiration). Irritation of regurgitated acidic gastric contents on the esophagus and mouth can result in tooth decay and gum disease. A tear in the esophagus can also occur (Mallory-Weiss tear) due to violent retching and vomiting.
Vomiting that is associated with head injury or vomiting of blood can be a symptom of a serious, even life-threatening, condition. These conditions are a medical emergency that should be immediately evaluated in an emergency setting....more about Vomiting »
