Glossary for Von Gierke Disease

  • Cheek symptoms: Symptoms affecting the cheek region
  • Congenital conditions: Any condition that you are born with such as birth defects or genetic diseases.
  • Congenital metabolic disorders: Congenital (birth) defects affecting any metabolic systems.
  • Delayed puberty: A lack of sexual maturation in an adolescent at an age significantly higher than the average age that child of that epidemiology attains puberty.
  • Easy bruising: Where one bruises with minimal trauma to the skin
  • Enlarged liver: Swelling of the liver.
  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Glomerulonephritis: Kidney disease where the kidney's have problems removing waste material and excessive fluid.
  • Gout: Painful joints, most commonly the big toe.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease: Inflammatory bowel disease refers to digestive symptoms resulting from chronic bowel inflammation. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are two of the main subtypes of the disease. Scientists have discovered an array of genetic mutations which can result in an increased susceptibility to inflammatory bowel disease. Not all people with the genetic anomaly will develop the condition but it can increase the risk especially if other environmental factors are also present. The severity of the disease that develops is variable.
  • Lactic Acidosis: Acidic blood (acidosis) due to buildup of lactate
  • Liver conditions: Any condition that affects the liver
  • Low blood sugar: Low blood sugar level
  • Metabolic disorders: Disorders that affect the metabolic system in human
  • Poor growth: Poor body growth or delayed physical development.
  • Proximal Renal Tubular Acidosis: This is a condition that is characterised by a metabolic acidosis state caused by impairment of a persons renal function
